MELBOURNE, Australia (March 28, 2012) –  From what can only be described as one of the greatest sporting achievements known to man, 1,600 participants became Ironmen & Ironwomen in the inaugural Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship Melbourne on Sunday 25th March, 2012.   The grueling 3.8km swim, 180km ride and 42.2km run course saw many highs and lows across the 17 hours of racing, with a winning time of 7hr 57.44 for three-time World Ironman World Champion Craig “Crowie” Alexander, through to 15 minutes past midnight ‘the next day’ for the final participant.   Behind the spot-light and glory of the professional athletes, are a throng of age groupers ranging in age from 20 (Jake Tobin) to 72 (Peggy McDowell-Cramer).   Wondering through the post-race recovery area, I saw faces full of bewilderment, pain, happiness, accomplishment, shock, tears and joy. MELBOURNE, Australia (March 25, 2012) –  Ironman World Champion triathlete Craig Alexander has posted his first ever sub-eight hour time to claim victory in the inaugural Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship Melbourne. In a race second placegetter Cameron Brown described as the “hardest” of his life, Alexander raced off with his first ever ironman victory on home soil. The win delighted the large crowd gathered at St Kilda willing Alexander to a home victory with the Sydney father crossing the finish line in 7hrs 57min 44sec. New Zealander Cameron Brown, who ran stride for stride with Alexander for most of the final marathon run, came home in second place (8:00:12) with Belgian triathlete Frederick Van Lierde third in 8:01:26 “Congratulations to Cameron Brown,” Alexander said. “What a warrior.
